Rabbi Nachum Kosofsky
Rabbi Nachum Kosofsky was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. He studied at Yeshiva University of Los Angeles, where he received a B.A. in Judaic Studies while attending the University of Southern California, where he received a B.A. in History. After a year studying in Kollel Meshech Chochmah in Jerusalem, he then continued his rabbinic studies at Ner Israel Rabbinical College and Kollel Avodas Levi in Baltimore, Maryland, where he received his semicha from the late Rav Shmuel Yaakov Weinberg, z”l. In Baltimore, he also attended the Johns Hopkins University, where he received an M.S. in Education. Rabbi Kosofsky received his Masters in Clinical Psychology at Antioch University Los Angeles.
In 1997, Rabbi Kosofsky and his wife, Elana, moved to Columbus, Ohio, joining the Columbus Community Kollel, where he continued his studies while teaching and lecturing to Jews of all backgrounds on a range of subjects: Tanach studies, Talmud studies, Halachah, Jewish philosophy and theology. He then became Assistant Rabbi of the Beth Jacob Congregation in Columbus, sharing the pulpit with the late Rabbi David Stavsky z"l.
In June of 2003, Rabbi Kosofsky returned to Los Angeles, assuming the spiritual leadership of Congregation Shaarei Tefila, one of the oldest and largest Orthodox congregations in Los Angeles. Together with his wife, Rebbetzin Elana, Rabbi Kosofsky has injected new life into Shaarei Tefila with new programming and classes for youth, families, couples, singles, and seniors. Under Rabbi Kosofsky’s leadership, Shaarei Tefila has reasserted itself as a center of Judaism and Torah learning with a newly renovated Beit Medrash and library, regular shiurim for men and women, and popular children’s Shabbat programming.
