About the Shul
Shaarei Tefila began in the 1930s as the Western Jewish Institute in Boyle Heights. The main sanctuary on Beverly Blvd was designed and built in the 1950s, and after the war it became the shul of choice for many survivors rebuilding their lives in Southern California.
Israeli Chief Rabbis, Prime Ministers and Presidents have all stood at its bimah, and the shul has davened here through every decade since.
