Accessibility Statement

A shul that is hard to use is a shul that is closed to someone. Tell us where this site falls short and we will fix it.

Our commitment

Congregation Shaarei Tefila intends this website to be usable by everyone, including people who browse with a screen reader, a keyboard alone, a magnifier, or with low vision or colour blindness. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA, the standard referenced under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 508.

What we have done

  • Written the pages in semantic HTML with a single main heading per page and headings in order.
  • Made every control reachable and operable by keyboard, with a visible focus outline and a skip link to the main content.
  • Kept text and interface colours above the WCAG AA contrast ratios against their backgrounds.
  • Used relative units, so the site reflows when text is enlarged to 200 percent or the window is narrow.
  • Given the schedule real table and list structure, so times are announced sensibly rather than read as a run of numbers.
  • Marked Hebrew text with its own direction so screen readers pronounce it correctly.
  • Honoured the operating system's reduced motion setting, and used no animation that flashes, autoplays or moves on its own.
  • Left the site working without JavaScript for its core information, with the office phone number offered as a fallback.

Known limitations

  • The Google map on the Contact page is a third-party embed. Once loaded, its accessibility is outside our control. The full address, cross streets and parking directions are written in text next to it for that reason.
  • The member portal is part of this site and is held to the same standard as the rest of it. It is newer than the public pages and has had less testing with assistive technology, so if something there is hard to use, tell us and we will treat it as a fault like any other.
  • Documents we occasionally post, such as a scanned weekly flyer, may not yet be tagged for screen readers. Ask us and we will read one to you or send the contents as plain text.

Tell us about a problem

If something here is difficult or impossible for you to use, we want to hear about it, and we will treat it as a fault to be repaired rather than a request to be considered. Call (323) 938-7147 or write to info@shaareitefila.org. Tell us the page and what happened, and we will reply within five business days.

We can also provide any information on this site in another format, including large print, plain text or over the telephone, at no charge.

Access to the building

For questions about physical access to the shul, including step-free entry, seating and parking, please contact us before you visit so we can make arrangements.
